Amazing Race introduces YP’s to the community
41 young professionals stepped up to the plate to win up to $5,000 in cash &
prizes during the 2010 Amazing Race. This year’s theme was Back to the
Future. During the first 28 days of the competition, teams of 2-4 were given
17 challenges that related back to Columbus’ history from the 1800’s-
1990’s.
Starting Line (view photo album):
At the kick-off, teams wore costumes from their favorite time in history.
Teams completed 7 different challenges next to the main stage at the
Columbus Area Arts Council’s biggest block party ever! Some of these
challenges included a bean bag toss, finding a piece of bubble gum at the
bottom of whipped cream pie & being the first to blow a bubble, & a quiz
about the other team names & competitors.
Anytime Challenges
(view challenges):
The teams are given a little less than one month in which team members can
compete on their own time. One of the challenges encouraged teams to
volunteer at area not for profits that was founded in the 1970’s. The
Amazing Race planning committee anticipates that area organizations will see
more than 500 volunteer hours as a result of this one challenge. We know
from past years that many of these volunteers continue to volunteer in our
community long after the race is over.
The winning team going into the race day was the REACH RACERS.
Race day (view
challenges):
On August 28, teams raced through the present & future of Columbus, making
stops at Hotel Indigo, Jackson Place, kidscommons, Irwin Gardens, Central
Middle School, the Farmers Market & more. At each stop teams answered
questions about Columbus & completed silly challenges like making a bed,
speed eating marshmallows, shooting hoops, playing an accordion, & dancing
to rapidly changing genres of music. It was a hot day, but all the teams
worked hard & learned a lot about Columbus.
What the teams had to say:
“The Reach Racers favorite thing about Columbus is the sense of community
that is felt here. In the last several years several community
circumstances, such as the historic flood & a tragic fire, have challenged
Columbus during times of an already occurring national recession. The
community has responded to these crises with a joint energy & commitment to
be better than ever before by meeting the challenges head-on! This is a city
where small factories & industrial organizations began to soon flourish &
thrive into a national spotlight, where exceptional architectural & design
l&marks have shaped history & made national rankings. A city flourishing
with a diversified community that varies in size, shape & character. An
educational system which generate opportunities for learners to achieve
excellence & continual advancement through constant improvements &
innovation! A city known for its economic flourishing due to the global span
of markets located here. Columbus is a city where quality of life is felt in
a multitude of ways, where a spectrum of culture, leisure & entertainment
can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. This is a place where a helping h& for
those in need is a part of the social norm. Columbus is a city where people
can live healthier & more active lives from opportunities created through
community outReach. Local businesses are making a commitment to their
employee’s health in Columbus. This community is built from more than just
brawn & steel, it is built from the passion & collaboration each member
invests into the community that gives Columbus its’ unique characteristic
which is second to none.” Dan Canfield- Reach Racers
“We would just like to say thank you very much for organizing such a great
event. We had a TON of fun and we got to meet some really great people from
CYP as well as in the community. Being on the second place team, can attest
to all the hard work and time that was put into this race and fully
understand the amount of time and money that would have been required to
organize such a great event with such great sponsors.” Nathan Kent- NITE
Riders
“While doing the challenges we are learning a lot of things I didn't know
about Columbus. I also found out that where my house is located used to be
the Crump's farm l& many, many years ago. We have met a few new people while
completing our challenges & most of them asked us what we were doing, & then
said it sounded so fun, they wished they were competing.” Heather Sweeny-
Greased Lightening
“We would like to congratulate all fellow amazing racers for all of their
hard work and for a job well done. We also would like to thank the amazing
race planning committee for all of their hard work and countless hours that
they put into this race to make it possible and last but not least the
endless number of sponsors for the awesome prizes and for sponsoring such a
awesome event. The Rockin Robins had a blast competing in the 2010 Amazing
Race and want to let anyone out there who is thinking about competing next
year that it is something that everyone should do at least once.” Jenny
